Taut

The Configuration

Both hands are flat on the machine. Not resting — flat. The fingers spread because the palms are taking weight. The arms are straight. The shoulders have risen just enough to stay there. Her jaw is set, but the face is not telling you what happened because nothing happened.

Taut was harder to find than anger. Anger points outward. It has an object, an opponent, somewhere to go. This has none. No one is being confronted. Nothing is about to happen. The body is simply spending energy to maintain a position the mind never chose.

This is tension without an event.

The Open Hands

Earlier versions used fists and hard grips. They were easier to read and less true. A fist turns tension into intention: preparing to strike, refusing to let go, deciding to endure. It gives the body a story.

These hands are open. That does not make them relaxed. The state is in the pressure of the palms, the locked line of the arms, the slight forward lean that goes nowhere. If you removed the face and the room, the body should still hold.

That is the test for Raw States. Not what expression is she making? What does the body know before she does?

The Launderette

I wrote this portrait before I could make it.

In The Launderette, a woman stands at a washing machine with both hands on the warm lid. Her jaw has set itself. Her shoulders are somewhere near her ears. She is holding something she can no longer locate or name. The line that unlocked the image was: the body has found its configuration and is holding it.

The machine gives her somewhere to put her hands. Its warmth and vibration give her a reason not to move. But it does not cause the tension; the room is only where the body happened to commit. Writing the state in prose first made the visual answer clear: do not illustrate a feeling. Show the maintenance of it.

What the Body Keeps

Stripped removed the choices. Cold folded inward to conserve itself. Taut is different: the body stays ready long after readiness has stopped being useful. It holds the unnamed thing because releasing it would require knowing what it is.

The machine will slow. There will be a click. She will have to decide whether to move.

She has not moved yet.
